Engaging with Iwi

Engagement with iwi/Māori on three waters service delivery reforms is expected to continue on an ongoing basis throughout the reform programme lifetime.

The Three Waters journey is a long process designed to meet our three waters challenges as well as build a world-class three waters system for New Zealand. Engagement with Iwi, local government, and industry experts during the Three Waters Review was followed by the Three Waters Reform Programme and establishment of the National Transition Unit to manage the transformation of the current system to the new one.

From May 2020, the Three Waters team at the Department of Internal Affairs has been undertaking extensive engagement work with interested parties to refine the reform proposals to ensure the reforms have the best chance of success. This engagement includes workshops across the country, webinars, technical reference groups and one-on-one discussions.

Engagement on three waters service delivery reforms is expected to continue on an ongoing basis throughout the reform programme lifetime – anticipated to take until 1 July 2024.

Alongside engagement with local government, the Three Waters team is also continuing engagement directly with iwi across the country. This includes engagement with groupings of iwi and direct one on one engagement, where invited.

Invitations to officials to engage can be emailed to threewaters@dia.govt.nz
