Water New Zealand Economic Regulation Panel

Water New Zealand hosted an insightful panel discussion on the economic regulation of the Three Waters reforms.

30 June 2022

Water New Zealand recently hosted an insightful panel discussion on the economic regulation of the Three Waters reforms, and the integral guiding korowai (principle) Te Mana o te Wai.

Speaking on the panel was Chief Executive of the Water Industry Commission for Scotland Alan Sutherland, Chief Executive of Taumata Arowai Bill Bayfield, Poipoia Founder Tina Porou and Commerce Commission’s Andy Burgess.

“Te mana o te Wai provides the opportunity for us to have a diverse range of thought for what water actually is to human beings,” Porou said.

Sutherland noted that Te Mana o te Wai is unique to New Zealand but has similarities with scientific research, outlining how to achieve good outcomes of water services, and provides a universal view of “if it’s good for the water, it’s good for us,” he said.
